You can see where my brand loyalties lie. Probably a minor thing in the end, but I wouldn't give up my 70-200 f/2.8 L glass if it meant life or death.

My old roommate Paul took this with a 20D I used to have while out railfanning at CP Holliday (arguably one of my favorite spots to catch inbound and outbound trains just west of Argentine).

The get-up you see in the shot is a Canon EOS 30D, Canon BG-E2 battery grip, and a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM.

I got a 50D with the BG-E2N, I want a 28-300 f/2.8 L but don't got the cash. I might just get a 70-200 f/2.8 L, then slap a 2x teleconverter on it. I also need a 580EX...

Stick with the 70-200. Cheaper than the 28-300, and has less lens distortion. Plus, if you're going that wide, get a different lens. I messed around with a 35-350 awhile back (before I bought the 70-200), and it drove me crazy how touchy the focus was at wide angles.

The 580 is awesome though. ;)

Got a 17-85 f4-5.6 IS currently and I love it. So I figured that the 70-200 would be a good match, then get a 2x tele-converter to slap on it and I can have everything from 17mm up to 400mm ;)

I need the 1.4 and 2x teleconverters myself, but right now I'm eyeballing a 24-105 f/4 L IS USM mid-range telephoto. I NEED that lens bad. Like, very bad, for weddings and portraits and stuff.

Try eBay. You can get 430's and 550's for fairly cheap (200-300), and the 580ex IIs like what I have run about 500 brand new. Worth the money. While I may not be able to get the 24-105 anytime soon, I may settle for the 28-135 since it has IS, which I could use while doing shots at the racetrack (IS is worth the extra money, pound for pound).

Amen on the IS. I use two lenses a 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM (Internal Focus) and a 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM

Got about 500 shots at the racetrack play-day today. Should provide for some good viewing.
